Why buy these when it is so easy and much cheaper to make at home? Better yet, you know exactly what is in them!

This one recipe makes the equivalent of 27 little packets of tiny teddies. That’s right. 270 teeny teddies! You will need a bit of time on your hands to cut them all in one sitting.

Lets look at ingredients:

Store bought Tiny Teddy Ingredients

Wheat Flour, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Honey (5%), Butter (Cream (From Milk), Salt), Vegetable Fibre, Salt, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Baking Powder, Natural Flavour.

My Teeny Teddies Ingredients

Plain flour, Honey, Butter, Self raising flour, bi carb soda, vanilla bean paste.

You can see immediately the difference in ingredients and how a homemade version is better for you in terms of knowing what is in the recipe. Talking about ingredients, use good quality honey. This will determine the taste of your biscuit. I suggest a nice mellow and subtle honey. A strong flavoured honey may be too overpowering especially for the kiddies.

Lets look at cost:

Store bought Tiny Teddy cost

$4.38 for 10 packets of 10-12 biscuits (packets vary)

My Teeny Teddies cost

     60g butter $0.40
     140g honey $1.50
     170g plain flour $0.15
     65g self raising flour $0.15
1/2 teaspooon bi carb soda $0.05
1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean paste $0.20

          = $2.45 for 27 packets of 10 biscuits

My chocolate teeny teddy recipe can be found here.

I purchased my cutter from eBay. Click her for “Teddy Cutter” listings It is the perfect size and very similar to store bought teddies. There are quite a few people who stock them so shop around. They come in a set of three of different sizes. This is the smallest. You should only pay about $3 for the set including postage.

Honey Teeny Teddies

  • Author: The road to loving my Thermo Mixer
  • Total Time: 75
  • Yield: 270 1x

Description

Making your own teeny teddies has never been easier!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 60g butter, cubed
  • 140g honey
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 170g plain flour
  • 65g self raising flour
  • 1/2 tsp bi-carb soda

Instructions

Then mix like this

  1. Place butter, honey and vanilla into bowl. 5 minutes / 100C / Speed 2.
  2. Add remaining ingredients. Speed 3 / 30 seconds. This will be a sticky, wet dough.
  3. Carefully remove dough from bowl with a spatula and place onto a silicone mat in a rectangle shape to cool slightly.
  4. Preheat oven to 180C. Line two large baking trays with baking paper.
  5. Once dough is slightly cooled but still warm and easy to work with, roll out into a thin rectangle about 2mm in thickness. When rolling, lift and flip it over a few times whilst rolling to ensure it’s an even roll. Work gently and slowly when lifting and flipping. If your dough is sticky, allow it to cool a little longer. You want a dough that is able to be lifted from the surface it is being rolled on.
  6. Using a small teddy cutter, cut shapes from the dough.
  7. Place trays into oven. These will only need to bake for 5-8 minutes or so. Watch them very carefully. You want them golden and a crunch to them. If you do not cook long enough, you may have less crunchy teddies on day two and beyond. Do not overcook though.
  8. Store in an airtight glass jar for up to two weeks.
  9. Or cook like this!
  10. Place butter, honey and vanilla into a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until melted.
  11. Remove saucepan from heat. Add remaining ingredients and mix to combine well. This will be a sticky, wet dough.
  12. Carefully remove dough from bowl with a spatula and place onto a silicone mat in a rectangle shape to cool slightly.
  13. Preheat oven to 180C. Line two large baking trays with baking paper.

Notes

  • For reasons unknown some Bellini machine users have difficultly with this recipe and the dough is crumbly. If this is the case for you simply add a little water or milk to bring it together. You will only need a tablespoon or so at most.

Thanks so much Peta! Making now.. Will be doing another batch.. And rolling thinner than previous batch! Lol but they still worked out! I added about a tablespoon of sprinkles to hide the vanilla bean that is in my vanilla bean paste that I’ve made! Lol of and Master8 asked if we can melt some chocolate for the backs!

Hey Peta do you think we can freeze these.. I’ve made 3 weeks worth for school lunches.. And thought maybe freezing them.. I freeze all my other biscuits and I see the apple creal bars can be frozen.. So couldn’t see why we couldn’t with this!

I couldn’t wait for a tiny teddy cutter so I decided to make these with a duck cutter that I had here today. These are a hit with my family, quite simple to make and my three year old had a ball cutting out all the duckies! Thanks so much for another great recipe!

Great recipe. I too couldn’t wait for teddy cutters so I’ve got not so teeny bats. Just tasted and are very nice. Can’t wait to do variations (and work out the right timing for my oven… As I’m sitting right in front of it waiting for the second batch to cook lol)

Hi just wondering if these can be made with gluten free flours?

    • Peta October 20, 2014 at 7:59 pm - Reply

I dont cook with GF flours etc so am unsure and would hate to suggest it and you waste time and ingredients.

Great recipe, easy to whip up the the thermo machine. I found I didn’t need to let mine cool for that time. A bit tedious with the cutting though lol

My daughter and I just made these and they are super easy and delicious! The dough was really easy to work with. I used fondant cutters I had with plungers and it worked perfectly! The cutter picked the dough up and we plunged the shape straight onto the baking paper so it was really quick! We made butterflies 🙂 Thanks for (ANOTHER!!) fabulous recipe! xx

Just made some of these. I substituted butter for nuttelex, honey for rice malt syrup and the flours for gluten free flour mix because our son is dairy free, gluten free and can’t have honey. They seemed to work very well. Now to test them out on my son when he gets home from school!

These are soooooo yummy. I made some of these with my day care children today. The dough was great for them to roll out and cut their own cookies out. We made little Christmas trees (a little early but we couldn’t help ourselves), stars and bears. They didn’t take long to cook and we were soon eating them and there isn’t many left.
Thanks for sharing such fantastic recipes.

I made these today with a star cutter as I don’t have a teddy one.

I got 420 out of my mix!!!! But, the start was VERY small.

Thank you Peta!! This was another hit with the kids, husband, inlaws and pretty much everyone that tried them!!!

    Hi Peta,
These are so yummy and my son had a great time making them with me.
I was just wondering your thoughts on how to make them chocolate flavour, rather than honey.
    Thanks heaps!

Fabulous recipe! Can’t wait for the choc one. When my dough got too hard to work with I just popped it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to soften it back up 🙂

    • Hanna November 13, 2014 at 6:49 pm - Reply

I wish I thought of that! I made them today and I must have let my dough cool too long as it was quite dry and kept cracking. Will keep this in mind next time!

you know they are good when your two boys who dont like the taste of honey cant stop eating them. We made round ones with a piping nozzle end as I couldnt wait for my teddy cutter any longer. Stopped counting at the 200 mark 🙂

Hi Peta, I have just made these this morning and the lids love them. Taste like the real thing, and they thought tiny teddies were cute. Looking forward to experimenting with chocolate ones.

    Thanks Peta!
Great recipe – worked a treat and the taste is great. The mixture definitely made the 270 but I was tempted to make bigger teddies because I get easily bored….. Will not be buying the alternative from now on. Thanks again for the recipe and the time that would have gone into creating this.

Thank you Peta for this recipe, it is great. Made them tonight for school lunch boxes and they have worked out a treat 🙂

Thank you Peta! I halved this recipe without any probs at all (reduced melting time to 3 mins) as we are a small family. My fussy 2 year old seems to love them, and so much better than the store-bought equivalent. I had no problems with the dough at all. I didn’t need to wait for it to cool, and I was able to re-roll the dough 5 times without having to reheat or fuss about, no cracking, nothing. Thanks again x

I’m waiting for my TM5 to be delivered but I’ve been making lists of recipes from your website I want to try – I thought I’d give these a crack using the stovetop. It’s such a good recipe, thank you so much! The biscuits are delicious and so easy to make, so much better than the store bought tiny teddies. Now to try the chocolate version!

  37. Megan November 15, 2014 at 10:24 pm - Reply

Made these today with gluten free flour and although I thought the dough looked too dry rolled ok in sections and baked well. Thanks!

I have just finally got around to making these for the first time. My kids are so impressed I am having to fight them off so there is actually some left for their lunches this week! It was so easy and even though it was a bit tougher to roll the last time I actually rerolled the dough four times to get well over a hundred cookies (my cutters are animals and robots so a bit bigger than the teddies). Thanks for another great recipe 🙂

  39. Esther November 16, 2014 at 11:32 am - Reply

made these for the second time yesterday and NAILED IT!!!

5.5 minutes is all i need in my oven, and they are perfect!!

    Thanks PETA

Just made these for the first time and they are delicious. Thank you for yet another awesome recipe. I only left my dough for 5ish minutes. It was still a bit sticky but got easier as I went along. Only made 176 but I’m pretty sure the first tray I rolled a bit too thick. Next to try the chocolate ones.

My teddy cutters finally arrived! Can’t wait to try these out.

  42. Lorraine December 7, 2014 at 9:50 pm - Reply

Made these for the 1st time yesterday. So quick and easy. Made them chocolate by taking out couple of heaped dessert spoons of plain flour and adding same amount of cocoa. Also used vanilla essence as didnt have paste. Worked out perfectly and the kids (and adults) devoured them. I think I didn’t roll the dough quite thinly enough so will make sure i do next time. Thanks for a great recipe!

  43. Bec Christo January 20, 2015 at 9:29 am - Reply

I’ve made a few different biscuits (no thermo here 🙁 ) and I’ve had an ‘ah-ha!’ Moment. Cut your baking paper to fit into your baking tray, then take the baking paper out of the try and roll the dough on the baking paper. Then instead of picking up & placing all the bickies (270times) you can remove the excess dough, leaving the bickies in place, then slide the baking paper and bickies back into the baking tray!

    Love this recipe!

  44. Holly January 21, 2015 at 5:27 pm - Reply

I haven’t made these yet, but used the technique Bec Christo mentioned when making your Wagon Wheelies the other day. The dough was so delicate and kept breaking on me (it was a hot day!) and it was so much easier. Will try the same for the teeny teddies.

  45. Kellie Smith January 25, 2015 at 2:52 pm - Reply

Finally got around to making these to test out for school snacks before school starts in a week. Easy to make and tastes good. Even better the only sweetener is honey, no sugar. Master 3 was doing laps around the kitchen bench sneaking a biscuit each time around 🙂

Wooohoooo……. Made these just now! Can’t believe how yummy they are need to stop eating so there is some left for the week!!!! Can’t wait to make again

PETA amazing recipe. Have cooked lots tonight did gluten free as my baby is gluten intolerant we have just discovered and still worked perfectly. Dough comes out slightly sticker but just let it completely cool and it’s very workable.

  51. Kell June 7, 2016 at 11:38 am - Reply

I’ve found with the Bellini if you spend 20 seconds mixing at speed 3 and the remaining 10 seconds at speed 4 the dough is not crumbly anymore.
